Ultrasonic Dental Cleaning

Dental Scaling/ Cleaning is a process to remove the plaque(Soft food deposits) and tartar(hardened calcified food deposits) from the tooth surfaces  used in prevention & non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease, or gum disease.

Ultrasonic dental cleaning is a more advanced method of dental cleaning than hand scaling (done by hand instruments). It is obviously less time consuming, more safer and  efficient way of removing deposits from teeth. Ultrasonic dental cleaning is done at the Center for dental Implants & esthetics with an instrument called an ultrasonic scaler, to remove plaque & tartar buildup from teeth.

Tartar buildup significantly increases your risk of developing gum disease, pyorrhea, heart diseases, pre-term & low birth weight babies in Pregnant Women and it can only be removed during professional dental cleanings because deposits are now calcified and adhered to the tooth surfaces.

Also tartar and plaque build up is like a vicious cycle, once deposited it will promote more and more build up and food deposit accumulation thus weakening the bone support around the teeth and causing teeth to become mobile eventually.

For Ultrasonic dental cleaning, scalers use  vibrations to loosen the  adhered plaque and calculus,  to crush and remove plaque and hard tartar deposits from the teeth. The vibration stretches and compresses these tiny bubbles until they implode and release a burst of heat and pressure. This energy loosens stuck particles, but it happens on a tiny scale with enough water as coolant. These vibrations disrupt bacterial cells and biofilm inside the plaque, and then irrigation(water jet coming out simultaneously from the scaler tip)is used to flush out and wash the  tooth surfaces

The specially designed tips of ultrasonic scalers can penetrate the gum pockets(which are created by poor oral hygiene maintenance and bone loss) much more deeply that manual scalers.

They’re also more safer as they cause no damage to the tooth root, which is crucial in preventing the progression of gingivitis or gum disease.

Cleaning Procedure

For the most comprehensive prevention and treatment of periodontal disease, a dentist usually requires two dental cleaning visits. In the first visit plaque and tartar is removed from the superficial surfaces and after that warm saline rinses, mouthwashes & topical ointments are prescribed to allow swollen gums to shrink back to their normal sizes.

Then in the second visit deep cleaning would be done as now the tooth surfaces which were previously covered with swollen gums are now clearly visible. If required your dentist can smoothen  the irregularities in the tooth root surfaces by using similar hand instruments by a procedure called root planing so that further plaque and tartar build up is prevented.
