Dental Implant Care
Dental Implants although are false teeth but they should be cared for just as one takes care of their natural teeth
Dental Implant Care – Immediately After Surgery
After surgery it will take 2-4 hours approx. for the effect of local anesthesia to wear off. You will need to take cold ice-cream, juice or yogurt 45 minutes after the procedure. Try not to bite on your cheeks as you won’t feel anything for some time. It is advisable to put ice packs over the area from outside in the first 24 hours. After 24 hours it is advisable to do warm saline rinses (not too vigorously) with a pinch of salt in the lukewarm water at least 4-5 times for a minimum of 5 days.
It is also advised not to take hot or hard food or tea coffee for 24 hours, you should take soft food like dal(lentils), rice or Porridge etc. You are also advised to continue taking medications as instructed and review after a gap of 7-10 days for suture removal. Crown can be placed at the time of first stage surgery or later on once implants are fused to the bone according to the treatment plan decided for you.
Dental Implant Care – Long Term
As you know, your own teeth require conscious at-home oral care and regular dental visits. Dental implants are like your own teeth and will require the same care. In order to keep your implant clean and plaque-free, brushing and flossing still apply!
After treatment, your prosthodontist will work closely with you and your dentist to develop the best care plan for you. Periodic follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your implant, teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.
